This teacher-led group works best for adults who are native speakers of

Tavern Terrace Outdoor Concert Series

Staten Island’s biggest backyard barbecue returns for another fun-filled season at Historic Richmond Town’s Main Village site. The Tavern Terrace will be open for the season beginning May 31. The Tavern Terrace Beer Garden features a selection of hand-crafted ales and lagers from Staten Island’s famed Flagship Brewery, and delectable smoked classics from Corner House BBQ, winner of the People’s Choice Award at the KCBS BBQ Cook-off and Uncorked!

The Terrace will be open Friday and Saturday evenings all summer long, featuring live music each Saturday! The Tavern Terrace at Historic Richmond Town is fun for the entire family!

I am always excited to have these yoga events on Staten Island, and I encourage the community to come out and take part in these free classes. Yoga benefits your mental, physical and spiritual well-being, and we are so fortunate to have our beautiful waterfront to use for these classes. Each class will offer residents an opportunity to unwind and relax with their friends and neighbors in a stress-free environment.

These free, beachfront events will take place at Turtle Circle (Father Capodanno Blvd. and Jefferson Ave). Attendees should bring a yoga mat or towel and arrive 15 minutes early to prepare.

Civil War Weekend

Back by popular demand, Civil War Weekend returns to Historic Richmond Town this summer! Join the victorious Union Army, August 10th and 11th, as premiere living history organization, The Liberty Rifles, presents a two-day long immersive program highlighting the service of Staten Islanders during the American Civil War!

The Liberty Rifles will represent the real, local Staten Islanders who were trained at Camp Sprague in New Dorp in the summer of 1863. Hear the stories of civilian New Yorkers thrust into war during our nation’s most tumultuous period.

The Liberty Rifles, founded in 1999, is a group of living historians who strive to accurately portray the common fighting men and home front civilians of the American Civil War, while excelling in terms of authenticity and organization. The LR was founded to represent soldiers and civilians on both sides of the war with equal accuracy and honor.

Come and experience the daily life of a Civil War soldier in 1863! Cooking, camping, marching, and drilling brought to life through detailed and interactive vignettes.

Experience the mysteries and stories of Staten Island in the days of yore. Listen to heart racing tales that took place right in your own backyard!

Each night features a new historic home. Tours leave from the Historical Museum at 9:00pm and 10:00pm and last approximately 40 minutes. Reservations are not required but suggested as each tour is limited to 15 guests.

NYRR Open Run: Conference House Park @ Visitor Center (in Conference House Park)

Open Run is a community-based, volunteer-led running initiative bringing free weekly runs and walks to local neighborhood parks, across all five boroughs of NYC. All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on the park, but the courses are between 2.5 and 3 miles long. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home – bag check is not provided. No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all ages, experience levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome! This program is in coordination with NYC Parks’ Community Parks Initiative.

Staten Island Sunday Volunteer Program @ Gateway National Recreation Area

Join a Park Ranger to learn about Staten Island’s coastal habitats while helping to protect the area by conducting a beach cleanup.

Please register ahead of time by emailing Joseph Roth at Joseph_Roth@nps.gov or calling 718-819-7574.

We will meet at the lower Campground Parking Lot in Fort Wadsworth.

Closed-toe shoes are required, and please wear clothing that can get dirty, a water bottle , sunscreen, insect repellent and snacks to keep you going.

Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult or in possession of the signed Volunteer Agreement Form with the signature or their parent or guardian.

Por tercera vez festejaremos La Guelaguetza en el condado de Staten Island, con el propósito de celebrar nuestras tradiciones, la alegría, la vida y la hermandad entre la comunidad oaxaqueña de Staten Island.

La Guelaguetza de Staten Island es un evento sin fines de lucro y completamente gratuito que busca promover y mantener la cultura oaxaqueña en Staten Island. What is La Guelaguetza?

La Guelaguetza, which in Zapotec means to cooperate, is an annual festival that celebrates the dances, music, crafts, gastronomy and traditions of the indigenous communities of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico.

This year we bring La Guelaguetza to Staten Island for the second time, with the purpose of celebrating the traditions, joy, life and brotherhood of the Oaxacan community in Staten Island.

Trail of the Month: Biking! New Springville Greenway/Multipurpose Trail @ Arlene Street and Signs Road

Abandoned Staten Island!

Aug 11 @ 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Our borough was the location for many facilities, factories, estates, and institutions from the early 1800s through the 1980s. Many are or were abandoned. We will look at the former Seaman’s Retreat (recently Bayley Seton Hospital), the Farm Colony and Sea View Hospital property, the old S.R. Smith Infirmary/Staten Island Hospital, several abandoned cemeteries, and the desolate locations left behind by the former Quarantine Department. Facts about these sites, their history, and their demise will be discussed. This program is a fundraiser for the Tottenville Historical Society. Cost: $8 payable by a check made out to the Tottenville Historical Society or by credit card.

We are pleased to host a free concert series by Viva Voce/the Staten Island Philharmonic outside in High Rock Park – under our tall trees! Bench seating is available, or you are welcome to bring a lawn chair.

There is a five-minute walk along a paved road to the stage area within the park. There is also limited parking closer to the stage for those who are unable to walk the distance. Our parking assistants will direct you. This event is free. Program is subject to change.

Campfire Great Kills Beach Staten Island

The National Park Service will host a blazing campfire on the beach that will include an
evening of music and stories. Bring a blanket or beach chair.

Stargazing at Pioneer Works

Come out and see the stars through our telescopes from Red Hook, at 159 Pioneer St, Brooklyn – in the garden space – every Second Sunday – free – open to the public – weather permitting.
