East River Journey through Hell’s Gate to Long Island Sound
Jul 14 @ 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join NLM members and friends for a cruise up the East River and pass through Hell’s Gate to Long Island Sound. We will cruise as far as Execution Rocks Lighthouse and learn of its gruesome history. The Stepping Stones Light is not to be missed!

Stepping Stones Light

This is a memorable cruise with expert presenters sharing little known facts about New York City history and the lighthouses we’ll see.

This season we will be yachting on the Majestic Princess which features climate-controlled interior spaces with large windows as well as ample outdoor space to fully enjoy the “yachting experience.” As for food items, the Majestic Princess offers lunch and snack items as well as a bar for “adult beverages.” There’s a new and exciting addition to our 2019 boat tour season … individual headsets will be available for listening (or not) to the narration provided by our presenters.

The boat leaves promptly at 11:00 am from Pier 1, St. George, Staten Island, adjacent to the Museum. Delays are possible, but not likely, however we are subject to tides and currents. Please refrain from booking a subsequent event too close to the time our tour is scheduled to end so that your plans will not be impacted. Non refundable tickets are $62 Adults, $42 Children (under 10yrs.), $52 Military and Seniors (62+).

This trip takes place rain or shine.

Tai Chi focuses the mind while training the body — meditation through movement. Once learned, it can be maintained easily as a healthy life-long practice, easily adapted to your abilities and/or limitations. Due to continuous movements, especially shifting body weight from one leg to another, Tai Chi delivers countless benefits, including increased strength, conditioning, balance, coordination, flexibility, stamina, range of motion, bone density, joint lubrication, mind/body connection; and more confidence, peace of mind thru-out the day, improved sleep at night. Note that this is the oldest original Chen-Style Tai Chi, taught by traditional instruction, where each student learns at their own pace and builds up their knowledge bit-by-bit.

Solar Observing: High Line NYC

The AAA hosts solar observing on the High Line one Tuesday afternoon each month from April through August. We also have nighttime observing on the High Line later that same day.

Observing will take place near the 14th Street entrance or just south of the Standard Hotel, which crosses over the High Line near 13th Street. For more information about the High Line, including directions, please visit our High Line page.

We have telescopes equipped with special filters for viewing the Sun. You may bring your own equipment, but we insist on strict safety provisions due to the dangers of improperly filtered direct solar viewing. All devices used for direct solar viewing must be fitted with approved filters.

Expert solar astronomer and AAA board member Tom Haeberle leads our Solar Observing. When you arrive, just look for Tom and his solar-filtered Telescope and enjoy.
