The Adult Learning Centers of the New York Public Library are pleased to
offer a new basic reading group on Fridays from 10:00-11:30 am at the St.
George Adult Learning Center.

This teacher-led group works best for adults who are native speakers of
English, or who are advanced English speakers who only struggle with
literacy. This group goes up to a third-grade reading level.

The Staten Island Zoo is happy to introduce our Saturday Zoofari program. We have created six exciting programs for children in PreK through 6th grade. This is a four hour (10am – 2pm) drop off program at the zoo.

Please pack a lunch for the day. There is no refrigeration for the lunches at the zoo so the lunches need to be non-perishable.

You can register for any number of sessions or all six! There is a 15% discount on the total price if you register for all six sessions.

Enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings while working on the NYC Compost Project demonstration site. The best way to learn about compost is to make it, and attending our Turn & Learns will make you a pro. Bring a water bottle, wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. If you help us make compost, you can take compost. Please bring your own container. (Please note this is a volunteer event and not a pick-up event. You must volunteer at the workday to receive compost. Supplies may be limited.) Registration is strongly recommended. Registration requested The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. Learn all about Snug Harbor’s New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden, the first authentic scholar’s garden built in the United States. Based on the classical Ming Dynasty period, our Garden presents the four essential elements of the traditional garden: rocks, water, plants, and architecture. Explore how each element demonstrates the opposing principals of yin and yang and reveals the philosophical traditions of thousands of years.

Open Run is a community-based, volunteer-led running initiative bringing free weekly runs and walks to local neighborhood parks, across all five boroughs of NYC. All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on the park, but the courses are between 2.5 and 3 miles long. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home – bag check is not provided. No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all ages, experience levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome! This program is in coordination with NYC Parks’ Community Parks Initiative.

Due to continuous movements, especially shifting body weight from one leg to another, Tai Chi delivers countless benefits, including increased strength, conditioning, balance, coordination, flexibility, stamina, range of motion, bone density, joint lubrication, mind/body connection; and more confidence, peace of mind thru-out the day, improved sleep at night. Note that this is the oldest original Chen-Style Tai Chi, taught by traditional instruction, where each student learns at their own pace and builds up their knowledge bit-by-bit.
