Spread the love

Registration is under way for the most popular – and fun – running event in the area!

Your entry fee is for two runners, and helps support the mission of the nonprofit Greenbelt Conservancy.

The High Rock Challenge is where two-member teams run together along Greenbelt trails competing in mystery events and physical obstacles, which are located throughout the approximately 10K course. Events are designed to encourage teamwork as well as physical and mental stamina. Events are not revealed until race day when you’re on the course.

The course is scenic and rustic. You will encounter single track trails, rugged terrain, streams and ponds, inclines/declines, and incredible vistas – especially for New York City! The Greenbelt is protected parkland that requires much care and maintenance. Our runners are stewards of the trail system, helping to keep it alive while respecting its fragile ecosystem.

Local runners have voted the High Rock Challenge as Staten Island’s favorite and most popular running event!

The race is held in memory of NYPD Officer John Kelly. Proceeds from the High Rock Challenge help support the Greenbelt Conservancy, a non-profit organization that provides trail maintenance and environmental education program

National Lighthouse Museum, Staten Island, NY 10301

The National Lighthouse Museum’s Staten Island premiere of the acclaimed short film –

                               Managed Retreat (2018)

By the end of this century, New York City is expected to have up to 6.25 feet of sea level rise, radically reshaping its 520 miles of coastline and impacting more than 100 coastal neighborhoods. An acclaimed short documentary portrait by director Nathan Kensinger “Managed Retreat” examines the fates of three New York City neighborhoods that were purchased by the New York State government in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy to be demolished and returned to nature as part of the city’s first ‘managed retreat’ from rising sea levels.

This observational documentary follows the process of retreat over the course of one year in three waterfront communities on Staten Island, as homes are destroyed, streets are abandoned, and wild animals begin to return.

Director Nathan Kensinger is a documentary filmmaker, photographer and artist whose work explores hidden urban landscapes, environmental disaster zones, and coastal communities impacted by sea level rise. He will be joined at the LIGHTHOUSE MUSEUM by a PANEL of EXPERTS studying the EFFECT of rising sea levels on neighborhoods.

Tickets are $10. For information/ Reservations 718 390 0040, info@lighthousemuseum.org
