Native Soil: Incidence and Homescapes
Mar 24 @ 10:00 am – Sep 23 @ 5:00 pm

Native Soil: Incidence and Homescapes is a large-scale retrospective of paintings by Sarah Yuster, spanning her thirty-year career.  Yuster’s work is subtle and intimate, sparking sentiments from viewers that explain her propensity to invoke a sense of “home.”  Yuster has had notable success as a portraitist, with works in two Smithsonian Museums and top university collections.

Opening reception: Saturday, March 24 | 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Buildings C&G)
Admission: Free

Admission to the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art (Buildings C & G) is $5 ($4 students/seniors).  Spring – Autumn hours are Thurs-Fri 12:00 – 7:00 PM and Sat – Sun 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

The following local businesses have provided generous support to Native Soil: Blue, Bayou and Beso Restaurants, Empire Outlets, Door to Door Realty, Snappy Solutions, Connie Lane Real Estate, and Victory State Bank.

Native Soil is made possible in part by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Open Garden Days: Deer Resistant Plants Demonstration Gardens @ Conference House Park Visitor Center (in Conference House Park)
Sep 15 @ 7:00 am – 7:00 pm

White-tail deer are herbivores, which means they eat plants. While there are no plant species that are truly deer-proof, deer do develop preferences and will ignore many types of plants in their grazing patterns. Planting with a high diversity of plant species will minimize the impact that any deer will have in your garden. The gardens around the Conference House Visitors’ Center feature plants that deer are less likely to eat. See which plants may work for your home! WildlifeNYC is a campaign launched by the City of New York to increase public awareness about urban wildlife, and how humans can live harmoniously with the animals who also call the Big Apple home.

Set in the untamed frontier of the 1870s American southwest, Vienna is beset with saloons, brothels, and loose morality. The Duke (Sheriff) is unwilling to use his authority to clean up the town and departs, leaving his strict and self-righteous deputy, Angelo, in charge. One of Shakespeare’s darkest comedies, the play’s main themes include justice and the dichotomy between corruption and purity.
