U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) will conduct a Search and Rescue demonstration in the water off the Intrepid Pier 86 for visitors and ships to see. During the demo, a USCG rescue crew will drop a mannequin into the water to simulate a person in distress. A rescue swimmer will then jump into the water to secure the mannequin. Both the rescue swimmer and the mannequin are then lifted securely back into the helicopter. As the official site host in New York City, participants will have the opportunity to learn about the ancient image-making process and join photographers around the world in making pinhole photographs as part of this international event that promotes and celebrates the art of pinhole photography.

The Alice Austen House and Staten Island Makerspace will host an afternoon of photographic activities and will provide materials, darkroom facilities and offer professional guidance from photographers. Each participant may take one pinhole photograph for FREE. Additional exposures can be purchased for $5.00. Participants will process their photographs in a “pop-up” darkroom. Rails to Trails: Conference House Park and Mt. Loretto Edition @ MTA Staten Island Railway-Tottenville Station

Celebrate National Trails Day! New York City, and especially Staten Island, is fortunate to have many wonderful parks including many “wild and natural” areas accessible via public transit. On Staten Island, some of the city’s most unique natural areas are a short walk from a train station. Join us for a “rails to trails” hike from the Staten Island Railway Tottenville Station through Conference House Park into the Mt. Loretto Unique Natural area/North Mt. Loretto Forest. The hike will end at the Staten Island Railway Richmond Valley Station. The easy to moderate hike will cover about 5 miles.

NYC Parks needs your help to defend Conference House Park against the invasive mile-a-minute vine! Native to East Asia, the annual Persicaria perfoliata vine is capable of growing up to six inches a day, often destroying young trees in the process. Join the NYC Parks Stewardship team to help protect our native habitats as we pull up as much of this aggressive weed as possible! Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty. Please bring your own water bottle to this event. Please note: Space is limited and registration is required . Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone.
