SNUG HARBOR ANNOUNCES SUMMER 2018 ART EXHIBITS:
Art of the 5: Revisiting Staten Island and Truth on Display
July 3, 2018, Staten Island, NY – Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is excited to announce two new visual art exhibits for summer 2018 at the Commons Galleries in the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art in buildings C & G.  The new exhibits (Art of the 5: Revisiting Staten Islandand Truth on Display) both spotlight local artists.  Both exhibits will be on display from July 21, 2018 – September 23, 2018.
“Our summer shows dive deeply into issues of identity and aesthetics,” said Melissa West, Snug Harbor’s Vice President of Curation and Production.  “Art of the 5 demonstrates the breadth and virtuosity of established Staten Island artists. Truth on Display features a group of talented emerging artists exploring their own truths. Both shows will inspire viewers to take a closer look at the world around them.”
Art of the 5: Revisiting Staten Island presents over 50 works of art by eleven artists who represent a mix of nationalities, genders, and varying degrees of fame and recognition. The participating artists are Alfredo Arcia, Irma Bohorquez-Geisler, Robert Bunkin, Susan Grabel, Lorenzo Hail, Helen Levin, David Jacobsen Loncle, Craig Manister, Bill Murphy, and Stephanie Pierce. Organized by guest curator Debra Vanderburg Spencer, this exhibition encompasses each artist’s unique individual practice.
Vanderburg Spencer states, “This survey exhibition reveals the very personal visual language of each artist by highlighting their individual practice rather than looking for links between them. It demonstrates the breadth and complexity of their artistic output, showcasing a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed media art.”
Art of the 5: Revisiting Staten Island will be on display in the Commons Galleries of the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art from July 21 – September 23, 2018, with a free opening reception from 2:00 – 4:00 PM on July 21.
Truth on Display is a group show which contemplates issues of identity and representation in both public and private spaces. Guest curator Eric Mapp, along with a talented collective of artists from Staten Island, are using their artistry to take a closer look at their individual truths.
On one side of the Commons Galleries, the work explores personal experiences of black, male identity. On the other side, female artists explore concepts of gender and power. The pieces in Truth on Display push creative boundaries and encourage dialogue, featuring artwork by Jodi Da Real, La Femme Cheri, Erika Lee, Eric Mapp, BE-I Prince, Taiwan Prince, and Debbie Roxx.
“Each canvas expresses images of truth,” said Mapp. “And each truth reflects individual identities that speak to the hearts of others.”
Truth on Display will be in the Commons Galleries of the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art from July 21 – September 23, 2018, with a free opening reception from 2:00 – 4:00 PM on July 21.
An artist and curator talk with Mapp is scheduled for September 15, 2018 from 2:00 – 3:00 PM in the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art Commons Galleries and is free with gallery admission.
