Explore the varied and lush acreage that makes Staten Island the greenest borough.  Discover the wildlife of Staten Island- big, small, furry, feathered, winged and crawling.  Learn to identify native plants, animals and distinguish from invasive species. Guided by experienced and knowledgeable members from Protectors of Pine Oak Woods, a 40-year-old plus organization of people committed to the stewardship of Staten Island’s existing parkland,  bluebelt corridors and nature preserves.  FREE GUIDED WALKS AND TALKS -Taking in Autumn Splendor October 2018.

One copy of this full-color 12-month 2019 calendar with images of Staten Island’s parks, wildlife and natural beauty will be available for a donation of $5 each. Stop by for cookies and coffee, to meet the photographers and enjoy an exhibit of their work. Guide Skye Suter, program director of Staten Island Herb Society, an organization for the purpose of promoting the growth of herbs and the use of herb gardens, as she  introduces popular herbs from the late 1800s. Charles Winne Jr., better known as “Bopper”, was a young boy with a great botanical curiosity. As the son of as surgeon, he lived at Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island shortly after the Civil War period. Learn about some of the herbs and plants Bopper might have discovered while exploring the fort and see flora of the world through his eyes in the historic setting of the Mont Sec House. Protectors of Pine Oak Woods  266th workshop meets at Nevada Avenue parking lot of High Rock (200 Nevada Avenue, Staten Island, NY) at Administration building. This autumn 10 mile walk begins at Willowbrook Park, the western gateway to Staten Island’s magnificent centerpiece.  The Greenbelt stretches through the Corson’s Brook Woods of Willowbrook Park and extends through the deciduous woodlands that inhabit Staten Island’s heartland. Explore the woods and wetlands of Staten Island’s  largest park with Protectors of Pine Oak Woods while enjoying  the fall foliage. Participants will meet in the Eton Place parking lot beside Willowbrook Pond at the Carousel For All Children.  For more information call Dominick Durso at 917-478-7607.
