Curator Talk + Q&A with Steffi Ibis Duarte

RSVP at ticket link!

What is Self-Taught Art? | This term, sometimes used interchangeably with “outsider art” or “Art Brut” is new to some and remains unclear to many. Join Staten Island Arts as we welcome Steffi Ibis Duarte, Assistant Curator of the Self-Taught Genius Gallery of the American Folk Art Museum, for an evening exploring the history of Self-Taught Art and its current evolution – in the New York City art world and the cultural landscape at large. Come to learn more about John Foxell’s art and investigate how this local legend’s art-making methods shake up longstanding practices within the self-taught field. Duarte will contextualize Foxell’s work amongst those of other important self-taught New York artists, including Ralph Fasanella, Louis Monza, and Gregorio Marzan.

Q&A to follow presentation. Light refreshments will be served.

We are thrilled to share the news that thirteen of Foxell’s assemblages have recently been added to the collection of the American Folk Art Museum! A selection are currently on display at the Self-Taught Genius Gallery.
