New York City’s premier food rescue organization—is working to not only meet this immediate need for food but also take a long-term approach to hunger relief through their Healthy Neighborhoods programs. Working with community partners in low-income neighborhoods across New York City—including careful attention to Staten Island—City Harvest is improving access to healthy, affordable food by providing free fruits and vegetables through Mobile Markets, and working with local food retailers to increase their ability to stock and sell healthy food.

Arguably the most vulnerable among us, hungry children on Staten Island can benefit from City Harvest’s Fruit Bowl Program, which regularly provides children in pre-school, Head Start and after-school programs with fresh fruit and low-fat dairy. Going beyond just provision to education, child caretakers benefit from an on-site liaison program providing nutrition activities and cooking demos—teaching the basics of nutrition and how to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget.
