Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race

Proudly sponsored by:

The Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race is a fun team event with the goal of raising awareness about the recreational opportunities available in and around New York Harbor. Join us at the Brooklyn Bridge Beach (directly under the Brooklyn Bridge on the Manhattan side) to cheer on this year’s participating teams as they build and race their life-size paper boats (yes, some of them sink!).

When not in use for the Cardboard Kayak Race, the Brooklyn Bridge Beach will be open for free public kayaking and beach education activities, on a first come first serve basis from 10am–1pm for free public kayaking and activities and from 3pm–4pm for activities.

Cardboard Kayak Race Schedule

  • 10:30am–12:30pm Cardboard Kayak building at Peck Slip Plaza
  • 12:30pm–1pm Judging at Peck Slip Plaza (awards are given for Most Classic Design, Most Creative, and more!)
  • 1pm–1:30pm Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Parade from Peck Slip Plaza to Brooklyn Bridge Beach
  • 1:30pm–2:30pm Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race at Brooklyn Bridge Beach
  • 2:30pm Awards Ceremony at Brooklyn Bridge Beach

At 10:30am at Peck Slip Plaza, the competition will begin when teams, drawn from corporations, schools, nonprofit organizations, and community groups, each receive precisely 10 sheets of corrugated cardboard, 10 rolls of packing tape, and 3 rolls of gaff tape. At 12:30pm, the construction period will conclude and judging (Most Classic Design, Most Creative, etc.) will begin. After judging all the boats for design, teams will carry their hand made vessels over to the nearby waterfront at Brooklyn Bridge Beach in a colorful Kayak Parade. At 1:30pm, race heats will begin, and by 2:30pm, the Con Edison Cardboard Kayak Race champion will be crowned. Join us and cheer on your favorite team!

Each team is encouraged to add personal decorations and flair to their boat, but only the following materials provided may be used for construction:

  • 10 sheets of corrugated cardboard – Approximately 60” x 60” (5 feet square)
  • 10 rolls of clear waterproof packing tape – 2 inches wide (or an equivalent amount in partial rolls – reduce, reuse, recycle!)
