That band of light we see in the sky in dark places is called The Milky Way. It has been known about for all of human history, however its true nature was only understood in the last century. I’ll discuss it’s origins in myth and legend as well as how we learned its true extent and composition, finishing with the discovery of our position in the Cosmos. After the talk, enjoy stargazing in the darkest place within an hour of Manhattan.

Jason Kendall is Adjunct Professor of Astronomy at William Paterson University. He is on the Board of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York, and is a leader in the pro-am community of the American Astronomical Society. His areas of research are introductory student learning and general relativity. Allyship 201: Recognizing Systems of Oppression and Intersectionality @ El Centro del Inmigrante
Oct 15 @ 12:45 pm – 4:00 pm

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Due to low registration we are postponing our Allyship Workshop to a yet to be determined date. Those who have already registered will be issued a refund. We look forward to learning alongside you in the near future. Thank you for continued support of our work!

———————————————————-

Join Move Forward Staten Island for a follow up to our first Understanding Allyship workshop. Designed for leaders, advocates, new and seasoned activists; this workshop will explore how systems of oppression marginalize individuals of different race, class, gender, ability, sexual orientation, and privilege. We will learn how to empower diverse communities by recognizing intersectional issues and explore methods of responding to bigotry as a victim or an ally. This workshop is designed to help participants move past good intentions to ensure that everyone has a seat at the table, amplify the voices that are marginalized in our community, and be silent when other voices need to be heard.

The workshop will be lead by an experienced facilitator, Robert King Kee. Kee has facilitated Cultural Competency, Team Building, Leadership Development and Conflict Resolution workshops for organizations large and small across the globe for two decades. Kee currently serves as an Adjunct Professor and the Coordinator of Student Leadership Development for the College of Staten Island where he teaches classes on a host of leadership competencies, from Mindful Leadership Development, Conflict Resolution, Community Building, Ethics & Values, Cultural Competency, Diversity/Cross Cultural Competence and Communication Skills.

Register today! The workshop will be limited to the first 40 registrants.

The workshop will be provided based on a sliding scale: $5 for general admission and $15 for those who have a little more means and are able to help Move Forward cover the costs of providing this training. No one will be turned away for an inability to pay. If cost is prohibitive to you, please contact us at info@moveforward.nyc and ask about scholarship opportunities for the Allyship Workshop.
