UFT Staten Island 7th Annual Parent Conference

Outreach team will offer information about healthy living, cancer services,
nutrition, behavioral health, rehabilitation, cholesterol, diabetes,
stroke, blood pressure, healthy aging, nutrition, and smoking cessation.

Fall Citywide Stewardship Day: Staten Island @ Franklin Avenue and Arnold Street (in Jones Woods Park)

Volunteer with the Stewardship Team for our Fall Citywide Stewardship Day! Volunteers will help restore and maintain natural areas all across the city. This event is also a part of our monthly Green Neighborhood series. Volunteers will learn how to identify and safely remove various invasive species. They will also have the unique opportunity to do some seeding in the park to help restore the forest. Come dressed in sturdy boots or shoes, long pants, and clothing that can get dirty. Please bring your own water bottle. Volunteers under 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone. Please note: Registration is required; please register here

Farm & Garden Work Days: NYC Compost Project @ Compost Demonstration Site (in Snug Harbor Cultural Center)

Cultivate an intimate understanding of the interconnections between soil, plants, and human health by working directly with the land. We’ll be getting our hands and knees dirty with tasks that include soil care, weeding, planting, bed preparation, composting, etc. Bring a water bottle, sun hat, closed-toed shoes, and wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Registration is requested . First Wednesday of the month: Meet at Heritage Farm Third Saturday of the month: Meet at Compost Demonstration Garden (next to Heritage Farm) The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY-funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. It’s My Park: Volunteer Along the Trails With Us @ High Rock Gate (in High Rock Park)

Universal Temple of the Arts (UTA) will present Staten Island JAZZ Festival 29 on Saturday, October 21, 2017 from 2PM until 7PM at the historic Music Hall at Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden.  This 30th annual celebration will feature performances showcasing the depth and breadth of jazz music, dance, song, art and spoken word.  This year’s featured performers include NEA Jazz Master Barry Harris, Reggie Workman, Winard Harper, Kiane Zawadi, Leopoldo Fleming Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble, Betty Shirley, Karlus Trapp and more!

Observing at North-South Lake, Haines Falls

The Amateur Astronomers Association has an agreement with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation that allows us to have observing sessions at North-South Lake, located in Haines Falls, New York, in the Catskill Mountains. This is an exceptionally dark location for deep-sky observing.

Our agreement allows only club members to participate. Contact the event chair treasurer@aaa.org to reserve a spot. The observing location is locked. Either you will be given the combination to unlock the gate or you will arrange to meet someone who has the combination.
